How Beat Shaper uses AI

Beat Shaper is an AI-assisted music production platform for creating editable electronic music. You can describe a musical idea in plain language, adjust musical controls, or combine both approaches to guide the result.

Beat Shaper generates musical structure rather than only producing a finished audio recording. Generated ideas contain editable parts such as drums, basslines and synth patterns that can be changed directly in Beat Shaper or exported for further production in a DAW.

Our goal is to use AI as part of an interactive creative workflow. Generation provides material to work with, while the producer remains in control of how that material is developed and used.

How generation works

The main way to create with Beat Shaper is to describe the music you want using a text prompt. For example, you might describe a genre, mood, rhythm, instrumentation or general musical direction.

Beat Shaper also provides musical controls for shaping a generation more directly. Depending on the interface, these can include controls for genre, mood, energy, complexity, syncopation, key and other musical characteristics. In the web application, text prompts and these controls can be used together, allowing users to choose how much they want to work through language or through direct musical settings.

The Max for Live device provides another interface to the same broader Beat Shaper generation technology, using musical controls directly inside Ableton Live rather than text prompts.

Generation is non-deterministic. The same prompt or settings can produce different results, allowing users to explore variations rather than receiving one fixed interpretation of their input.

Editable by design

Beat Shaper generates music as symbolic musical structure. In practical terms, this means that the notes, rhythms and individual musical parts remain accessible instead of being permanently combined into a single generated audio file.

Generated material can be edited directly in Beat Shaper, including changes to notes, timing and other musical details. Users can regenerate individual ideas, keep parts they like, build larger arrangements and export their work as editable MIDI or other supported formats.

This is an important part of how we approach AI-assisted music creation. The generated result is a starting point for a production workflow, not something the user has to accept unchanged.

Training data

Beat Shaper's music generation technology is trained using instrumental MIDI material licensed for AI model training. The use of licensed training material has been a core part of our approach to developing Beat Shaper. We've worked directly with the artists and rights holders to obtain this material for the explicit purpose of training Beat Shaper's generative models.

Intended scope

Beat Shaper is primarily designed for instrumental electronic music. Current supported styles include Techno, House, Acid, Drum & Bass, Hip-Hop/Trap, Trance and related electronic genres. The exact set of available styles and controls may change as Beat Shaper continues to evolve.

The system is intended for generating and developing musical ideas within these genres rather than reproducing every possible genre, instrument or type of music.

Because generation is probabilistic, prompts and controls influence the result rather than specifying every musical detail exactly. Different generations can therefore interpret the same creative direction in different ways.

User control

Users remain in control throughout the creative process.

You decide what musical direction to provide, which generated material to keep, and how to develop it further. Generated parts can be edited, regenerated, duplicated, extended, arranged or discarded. Individual tracks can also be kept while other parts are regenerated or developed further.

Generated material can be exported to standard production environments, including through MIDI and audio exports and Ableton Live workflows, depending on the Beat Shaper product and plan being used.

Beat Shaper therefore supports AI-assisted creation while leaving the musical and production decisions with the user.

Data and privacy

Using Beat Shaper involves processing information needed to provide the service, including generation inputs and generated musical content. Our Privacy Policy explains what information is processed, where it is processed, how long it is retained and which service providers are involved.

For text-to-music functionality, text prompts are processed with the support of the OpenAI API. According to our current Privacy Policy, this processing takes place within the EU and prompts are not stored by OpenAI. Beat Shaper's own AI services run on AWS servers located within the EU.

Generated content

AI-generated music is not necessarily unique. Similar musical ideas can occur across different generations or resemble existing musical patterns, particularly in styles that share common rhythms, harmonies and conventions.

Users should therefore treat generated material in the same way they would other material introduced into a creative production process and make their own decisions about how it is edited and used. Our Terms of Use contain the current rules concerning generated content, ownership and permitted use.
